Ciprés Mediterráneo

Especie autóctona de origen mediterráneo. Su distribución es propia del este y sur del Mediterráneo como Líbano, Siria, sur de Grecia, Túnez o Marruecos. En España se le puede ver por toda su geografía como especie ornamental o en repoblaciones forestales puntuales.

Su presencia constante en todos los cementerios obedece a su enorme longevidad que evoca la vida eterna, y a toda una simbología alrededor de la muerte que ya le atribuían las antiguas civilizaciones griega y romana. La forma ascendente y frondosa del tronco hacia la copa de este árbol, a modo de aguja, se creía que encaminaba y conducía (según la mitología) las almas de los difuntos hacia los cielos. Así simboliza la unión entre el cielo y la tierra.

The Mediterranean Cypress

A native Mediterranean species, its habitat is the East and South of the Mediterranean, such as Lebanon, Syria, the South of Greece, Tunisia or Morocco, in Spain found throughout its territory as an ornamental species or in specific reforestation settings.

Its widespread presence in cemeteries is due to its enormous longevity that evokes the concept of eternal life, the symbolic surrounding of death, a force already attributed to it by ancient Greek and Roman civilisations. The straight up and lushness of the trunk towards the crest of this tree, like a needle, was believed to be the road by which the souls of the deceased (according to mythology), went to heaven. Thus it symbolises the union between Heaven and Earth.
