Algarrobo

Originario de la región mediterránea, su distribución es confusa ya que lo encontramos en todos los países de la cuenca del Mediterráneo donde ha sido cultivado desde la antigüedad.

En España ha servido como un buen alimento para el ganado, y para las personas en épocas de carestía. Así fue un alimento base durante la guerra civil española y la postguerra.

Parte de la producción de Algarrobas de Mallorca se exporta a Finlandia para alimentar a los renos de Laponia. La semilla del algarrobo o garrotín, de peso y tamaño muy uniformes, llamó la atención de los antiguos joyeros árabes y judíos que los utilizaron como unidad de peso. Así fue el patrón original del quilate que equivale a 200 miligramos, el peso aproximado de un garrotín.

Antiguamente se obtenía la goma de garrotín, usada para preparar los tejidos de las vendas que cubrían los cuerpos de las momias, ya que sus propiedades han hecho posible que tales tejidos hayan podido resistir la acción del tiempo.

The Carob Tree

Native to the Mediterranean region its specific origin is unclear since we find it in al/ the Mediterranean countries, where it has been cultivated since ancient times. In Spain it was (and sti/1 is) good feed for livestock, and al so for people in times of famine. lt represented basic food during the Spanish civil war and the post-war period.

Part of the Mallorca carob production gets exported to Finland to feed the reindeer in Lapland.The seed of the carob tree or carob, of very uniform size and weight, caught the attention of ancient Jewish and Arab jewellers who u sed them as a weight unit, so it became the original measure of a Carat which equals 200 milligrams, the approximate weight of a carob.

In antiquity they produced carob gum, used to prepare the tissues of the bandages covering the bodies of mummies since its properties made it possible for such tissues to hold off the ravages of time.
