Catalpa

Especie originaria del sudeste de los Estados Unidos de América. La catalpa es un árbol caducifolio de gran belleza ornamental. Sus hojas son uno de sus elementos mas destacados debido a que son de gran tamaño, de 12 a 20 cms de longitud y en forma acorazonada. Sus flores son blancas y de un buen tamaño, agrupadas en racimos terminales. Otro elemento muy visible en el árbol son sus frutos en forma de vaina muy alargada y que puede llegar a los 40 cms de longitud, en su interior contiene numerosas semillas aladas diseñadas para su dispersión por el viento. Estas largas vainas permanecen en el árbol incluso durante el invierno, lo que le da un aspecto inconfundible.

El nombre que recibe esta especie tiene su origen en la tribu de los Catawba, antiguos nativos indios del sureste de Norteamérica, los cuales nombraban a su vez a estos árboles con el nombre de catawba.

Specie originating from the southeast of the United States of America. The catalpa is a deciduous tree with great ornamental beauty. Its leaves are one of its most outstanding elements since they are large, 12-20 cm in length and heart-shaped. Its flowers are white and of a good size, grouped in terminal kernels. Another very visible element in the tree are its fruits that have the shape of long pods and may attain 40 cms of length, and inside of it there are several winged seeds shaped to be dispersed by the wind. These long pods remain on the tree even during the winter, which gives it a very singular appearance.

The name given to this specie was given by the Catawba tribe, an old native Indian tribe of the southeast of North America, which at that time, gave the name catawba to this tree.
