Palmera Datilera

Es originaria del Noreste de África y el Medio Oriente. Se cultiva en forma comercial principalmente en los países de Egipto, Irán, Arabia Saudita, Pakistán e lrak, pero también en Estados Unidos, España y México. Especie dioica y muy longeva, tiene una vida media de 250 a 300 años. Algunos ejemplares tienen más de 300 años. En la iconografía cristiana la presencia de la palma en la mano del santo indica que ha sufrido martirio.

Se usan prácticamente todas sus partes: sus hojas, para rituales religiosos tanto cristianos como hebreos y la elaboración de múltiples útiles domésticos, su tronco para postes y vigas de chozas en África del norte y sus frutos, los dátiles, grandes, comestibles, dulces y energéticos, son muy apreciados en cocina y repostería, y una estupenda fuente de minerales y vitaminas. Puede llegar a soportar enormes amplitudes térmicas: desde 50°C hasta 0º C (aunque esta última temperatura, por poco tiempo).

lt is native to northeast Africa and the Middle East. lt is cultivated commercially mainly in Egypt, lran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and lraq, but also in the United States, Spain and Mexico. A very long-lived and dioecious species, it has an average life span of 250 to 300 years. Sorne specimens are over 300 years old. In Christian iconography, the presence of the Palm in the hand of a Saint indicates he suffered martyrdom.

Virtually all of its parts are used: leaves, for both Christian and Hebrew religious ritua/s and multiple domestic uses, its trunk for poles and beams of huts in North Africa and its fruits, the dates, large, edible, sweet and energetic, highly appreciated in cuisine and confectionary, plus a great source of vitamins and minerals. 1t can withstand large temperature ranges: from 50°C to 0º C (although this last temperature only for a short time).
